Lanterns are a very popular and typical symbol of many Asian cultures at Lunar New Year. Lanterns have the symbolic meaning of light - to usher in good luck for the new year and push away any negativity.
There are many traditional decorations for good luck, but lanterns hold a special place for me. Tet is always a happy and festive time, and my family gatherings are always loud with laughter and stories. We always have little lanterns decorated on branches of silk yellow apricot blossoms. Nana would tell me stories about my Ong Ngoai, who passed away a few months before I was born.
The lanterns are made with pearlised deep red frames, and light gold inserts. A gold thread tassel is attached. The earrings measure 7.5cm in height (top of earring stud to the bottom of the tassel) and 2.5cm in width. The earrings are finished with hypoallergenic steel studs and a comfort backs.
